Ribbon goby
Elongate; head compressed; top lip separated from snout by a groove; tongue notched; teeth are conical, arranged in a single row, males with recurved canines; gill membranes broadly joined to body under throat, with 5 rays; dorsal fin VII (male with elongate 1st spine) + I, 10; length of 2nd dorsal base > distance from 2nd dorsal base to tail fin; anal fin I, 8-9; pectoral fins 17; pelvic fins I, 5, disk complete; tail rounded; body naked except for 4 very rough scales on tail fin base; no lateral line.
Translucent straw color; head pinkish, with reddish blotches and lines, 2 thin red-orange bars across nape, rear bar extending down onto pectoral base; 13 thin greenish-tan bars (with much wider clear interspaces) on body and tail base; internal elongate black blotches separated by white dashes along vertebral column; two large black blotches on white belly.
Reaches: 1.9 cm.
Habitat: found on algae encrusted coral remnants.
Depth: 3-16 m.
SW Gulf of Mexico.
