Body elongate, slightly compressed; eyes moderate, towards front, narrow between them; tongue bilobed; teeth in upper jaw in 2-3 rows; 2 or three large canines on either side of jaw, in outer row; lower jaw in males with 2 large recurved canines in front; females with smaller teeth in outer front row; front of roof of mouth without teeth; gill rakers short, triangular 0 + 4-5; gill membranes broadly joined to body under throat, with 5 rays; dorsal fin VI, spines not elongate in either sex, + I, 11 (10-12); length of 2nd dorsal base > distance from 2nd dorsal base to tail fin; anal fin I, 12 (10-13); pectoral fins 16 (9-18); pelvic fins I, 5, united forming a disc; scales rough, none on head, except nape with 10-12 scales before 1st dorsal; 31(28-35) in lateral series; no lateral line.
Tan; dark blotch on cheek below and behind eye; faint shoulder spot; edge of preoperculum distinctly darker; a dark spot on the center front of the opercle; dark comma-shaped blotches on mid and lower flank; tail fin with a dark spot at its base, rest of fin barred; dorsals and anal with oblique dark bars.
Reaches: 6.5 cm.
Habitat: From rubble shallows of open coasts to nearly fresh water.
Depth: 0-10 m?
Bermuda to the S Caribbean.
