Body elongate, slightly compressed; eyes large, towards front, narrow between them; tongue slightly emarginated to distinctly emarginate or bilobed; teeth in upper and lower jaws in several rows, outer enlarged; large recurved canines on mid-side of lower jaw in male; front of roof of mouth without teeth; gill rakers short, triangular 0 + 4-5; gill membranes broadly joined to body under throat, with 5 rays; dorsal fin VI (3rd spine elongate in males) + I, 11(10-11); length of 2nd dorsal base > distance from 2nd dorsal base to tail fin; anal fin I, 12 (11-12); pectoral fins 16-18 (13-18); pelvic fins I, 5, united forming a disk; scales rough 33 (29-36) in lateral series, no scales under pectoral fin base; no lateral line.
Body color light tan, patterned in dark brown to black; sides with five blotches along midline; back crossed by several diffuse bars not reaching the midline of body; side of head with a blotch of pigment extending from the lower rear corner of the preopercle forward toward the front of the eye; an oblique stripe from corner of mouth to preopercular angle; pectoral fin with 4-5 vertical bars; caudal fin with 7-8 vertical bars; pelvic fins dusky; anal fin with small, black, discrete spots at the base of the membranes between the rays in males, absent in females; 1st dorsal with four dark stripes, the outermost wide and reaching to the edge of the fin; 2nd dorsal fin with three dark stripes.
Reaches 5.8 cm.
Habitat: Rivers and estuaries.
Depth: 1-15 m?
Florida to the S Caribbean.
