Elongate, compressed body; head rounded; eyes small, towards front, narrow between them; a broad low keel on head in from of 1st dorsal; 2 pores behind eye, last one on preopercle; upper jaw attached to snout along most of its length; lips thin; tongue slightly emarginated; teeth in 8 rows in both jaws, outer row with some enlarged teeth; strong recurved canines along side of lower jaw; front of roof of mouth without teeth; gill rakers short, triangular 0 + 4-5; gill membranes broadly joined to body under throat, with 5 rays; dorsal fin VI (3rd spine longer in males than females) + I, 11 (11-12); length of 2nd dorsal base > distance from 2nd dorsal base to tail fin; anal fin I, 12; pectoral fins 17-18; pelvic fins I, 5, united forming a complete disk; tail fin long and pointed; scales rough on head and body, base of pectoral, chest and belly; no or a few scales on nape; 35-43 in lateral series; no lateral line.
Color: Body tan with 5 dark oval blotches along mid-flank; a diagonal stripe from top rear of top jaw to just below and behind eye; angle of preopercle distinctly darker; bottom of base of pectoral fin with a dark bar or spot; anal fin orangish; pelvics grey, darker in male; lower border of tail fin dark grey, darker in male.
Reaches: 9.3 cm.
Habitat: Found in brackish and fresh waters.
Depth: 1-10 m?
Cuba to the S Caribbean.
