Bridled goby

Snout profile slightly rounded; crest on head; head pores present, usually 1 between center of eyes, 1 pair between rear nostril; papillae on cheek in horizontal rows; front nostril a short tube, rear a raised rim; mouth small, relatively horizontal; gill membranes broadly joined to body under throat, with 5 rays; dorsal fin VI + I, 9; length of 2nd dorsal base > distance from 2nd dorsal base to tail fin; anal fin I, 9; pectoral fin 18-19 (17-20); pelvic fins I, 5, disk complete, joined at front, with straight rear margin, frenum present; body covered with scales, scales large, rough, absent from head, 26-28 in lateral series; no lateral line.

Pallid to darkly pigmented depending on habitat; body with three rows of dark X markings, from head to tail base, middle row generally darkest; a white bridle from mouth to upper operculum; a prominent, double-pointed, triangular black spot above corner of opercle; a small dark spot on upper pectoral base, sometimes 1-3 fainter markings at lower base; tail base with 2 dark spots, sometimes a thin dark line joining them; fins clear to dusky.

Reaches: 8 cm.

Depth: 1-61 m.

Habitat: Sand around bases of coral reefs.

North Carolina to Brazil.
