Snout profile straight; low crest on head; head pores present, usually 1 between center of eyes, 1 pair between rear nostril; papillae on cheek in horizontal rows; mouth small, relatively horizontal; gill membranes broadly joined to body under throat, with 5 rays; dorsal fin VI + I, 9; length of 2nd dorsal base > distance from 2nd dorsal base to tail fin; anal fin I, 8-9; pectoral fin 19-20 (18-20); pelvic fin I, 5, 5th ray shorter than 4th, fins united forming disk with front membrane present; tail fin rounded; body covered with scales, scales large, rough, absent from head, 25-26 in lateral series; no lateral line.

Body entirely pallid, with yellow -orange marks; eye with a ring of dark spots; a thin blackish bar at base of tail fin; a yellow-orange stripe, sometimes dark edged, from eye to area below 1st dorsal fin; an oblique dark bar angled down and forwards from eye to mid-side of top jaw, an upturned dark line behind corner of jaw; sometimes a bronze stripe above yellow stripe; bronze stripes on cheek, along belly and upper back; a pale orange blotch but no dark spot on upper pectoral-fin base.

Reaches: 6 cm.

Depth: 1-54 m.

Habitat: Reef areas with coral and/or limestone and areas of protected fine white coral sand.

North Carolina to the S Caribbean; Brazil.
