Snout profile straight; head pores present, usually 1 between center of eyes, 1 pair between rear nostril; papillae on cheek in horizontal rows; mouth small, relatively horizontal; gill membranes broadly joined to body under throat, with 5 rays; dorsal fin VI + I, 9; length of 2nd dorsal base > distance from 2nd dorsal base to tail fin; anal fin I, 9; pectoral rays 18-20; pelvic fins I, 5, rays branched, 5th much shorter than 4th, fins fused to form a disc, rear margin indented, somewhat V-shaped, adults with no anterior membrane between spines; tail fin rounded; body covered with scales, scales large, rough, absent from head, 26 in lateral series; no lateral line.
Translucent grey: eye with dark radiating lines; dark bar below eye; often several dark lines back from eye; a dark spot immediately behind eye; no dark spot above operculum; 10-11 dark spots on midline from head to tail base; sides with numerous pink, tan and yellow spots of varying size; tail fin base with a dark bar joining 2 spots; pectoral fin base with two dark spots, dorsal and ventral, upper spot usually with a black streak extending onto fin rays; vertical fins without any pattern; small spots in membrane of ventral fin.
Reaches: 5 cm.
Depth: 1-56 m.
Habitat: Coral reefs; prefers rocky areas between individual coral colonies.
Georgia to the S Caribbean; also Brazil.
