Snout profile straight; head pores present, usually 1 between center of eyes, 1 pair between rear nostril; papillae on cheek in horizontal rows; mouth small, relatively horizontal; gill membranes broadly joined to body under throat, with 5 rays; dorsal fin VI + I, 9 (rarely 8); length of 2nd dorsal base > distance from 2nd dorsal base to tail fin; anal fin I, 8; pectoral rays 16-17; pelvic fins I, 5, with rays unbranched, fins almost completely separate, anterior membrane very reduced; body covered with scales, scales large, rough, absent from head, 25-26 in lateral series; no lateral line.
Head and front body mottled with orange, rear body mottled with yellow; body with scattered small spots and seven larger darker spots on top of body under bases of dorsal fins; a dark bar on front of belly, just behind pectoral fin base; a dark spot present on tail base; 1st dorsal fin with a black blotch between spines II & III; tail and pectoral fins essentially clear, with some scattered small spots; anal fin dusky except near base; no black ring around anus.
Reaches: 4 cm.
Depth: 9-32 m.
Habitat: flat coral heads in clear water.
Florida to the S Caribbean.
