Body moderately elongate; head short; snout blunt; eyes small, 6.9-10% SL; mouth large, very oblique; teeth in 2 rows, the outer row enlarged; front of roof of mouth no teeth; gill membranes broadly joined to body under throat, with 5 rays; dorsal fin VII (front 3 spines elongate) + I, 11 (rarely 10); length of 2nd dorsal base > distance from 2nd dorsal base to tail fin; anal fin I, 10-12; pectoral fin rays 19-21; pelvics fused to form disc, front margin of disc scalloped; tail fin lanceolate; scales large, rough; body, top of head, and nape fully scaled; 27-29 lateral scales; no lateral line.
Body yellowish-pale; side of body without distinctive markings; top lip with distinct black stripe immediately above jawbone; first dorsal fin with black spot, on spines IV-VI; pelvic disc pale.
Reaches 10 cm.
Depth: 37-200 m.
Habitat: Mud bottom.
