Ragged Goby

Body moderately elongate; head convex and moderately compressed; snout blunt; eyes small (diameter 8.1-10% SL); close together; mouth large; teeth in 2 rows, outer row enlarged and canine-like; front of roof of mouth no teeth; gill membranes broadly joined to body under throat, with 5 rays; dorsal fin VII (none elongate) + I, 13 (rarely 12-14); length of 2nd dorsal base > distance from 2nd dorsal base to tail fin; anal fin I, 13 (rarely 12 or 14); pectoral fin 20-23; pelvics fused to form disc, front margin of disc scalloped; tail fin lanceolate; scales large, rough; body, top of head, and nape fully scaled, lower margin of cheek lacking scales; no lateral line.

Drab yellowish brown, with median row of ~5 very faint blotches, strongest one at base of the tail fin, those not connected by a pale stripe; iris dark; no black stripe above upper lip; first dorsal with distinct black blotch (with black stripe above that in male); dorsal fins and upper tail fin with dark elipses with yellow-orange centers; pelvic fins often very dark, to black; tail dusky.

Reaches 10 cm.

Depth: 10-85 m.

Habitat: Mud bottom.

The Gulf of Mexico.
