Notch-tongue goby

Body robust; head broad, depressed, with pores; snout bluntly rounded; eyes large, close together; mouth moderate sized, relatively horizontal; top jaw long, 11.1 to 15% of SL; tongue with deep notch in front; jaw teeth in bands, without canines; gill membranes broadly joined to body under throat, with 5 rays; dorsal fins VI (none elongate) + I, 9 rays; length of 2nd dorsal base > distance from 2nd dorsal base to tail fin; anal I, 8; pelvic fins fused into a disc; pectoral 16-17( rarely15 or18), upper 3-4 rays free, as silky threads; tail round; scales large, rough, 31-36 along side, present on midline of nape to a line above or slightly before rear edge of preopercle; usually no scales on cheek or operculum; no lateral line.

Color highly variable; body uniform or with indistinct dark blotches, sometimes in a series of 6-7 along body; trunk with thin dark lines along scale rows but no diagnostic pattern of pigment spots or blotches; dorsal fins dark, with dark stripes, tail fin base with or without a smallish dark blotch; tail fin dark, with thin dark bars.

Reaches 7.5 cm.

Depth: 0-5 m.

Habitat: Sandy bottoms with turtle grass, generally in mangrove-lined tidal streams and generally in sheltered waters.

Distribution: Bermuda to the S Caribbean.
