Whiskered goby
Body rounded; head robust, flattened above; anterior nostril a tube, posterior a short tube; head barbels long, the longest greater than eye diameter, single barbel at middle of snout tip, two barbels arranged vertically between eye and mouth, 0 barbels on rear outer face of mouth; 14 barbels along the ventral edge of the head; front of tongue with 2 lobes; teeth in upper jaw with a patch of very small teeth at the center and a row of enlarged canines outside, a few large canines on the inner margin; lower jaw with three rows at the anterior, reducing to a single row towards the sides, outer and inner rows with canines; gill opening small to a shallow S slit along base of pectoral; gill membranes broadly joined to body under throat, with 5 rays; dorsal fin VII + I, 8-11; length of 2nd dorsal base > distance from 2nd dorsal base to tail fin; I, 7-9 anal rays; 16-20 pectoral rays; pelvics fused into a disc; tail round; no scales; no lateral line.
Black or blotchy black on a pale background.
Reaches 2.5 cm.
Depth: 0-3 m, usually < 0.3 m.
Habitat: Shallow water rocky habitats.
The Bahamas to the SE Caribbean.
