Body compressed, tapering to tail; head large, flattened above, rounded and narrow at front; eyes on top of head, distinctly stalked, but stalks short (<eye diameter), with a spot at tip; mouth upturned, with a protruding lower jaw, top jaw reaching past eye; rear nostril a single pore near base of tubular front nostril; operculum and both lips with skin flaps; 1st preopercular canal branched, with multiple pores on branches; canal pores on preoperculum 21-90; dorsal fin origin on nape, before level of upper corner of operculum, continuous or with I-III free spines at front, X (X-XI) spines, 31 (29-32) rays; segmented anal rays 33 (33-34); pelvic fins inserted under throat, each with I, 3, rays thickened and free at the tips; typically a notch under lower edge of tail fin base; scales large, smooth; lateral line bends down under last dorsal spine, usually 16 pored scales on that part, total of 45-47 scales; 3 rows of scales between lateral line and 1st two dorsal spines, 1 row under rest of spines.
Light tan; top of head and back blotched and irregularly barred with brown; upper body with 10 or more irregular brown bars between nape and tail fin base; eye blackish; pigmented inside mouth.
Reaches 8 cm.
Lives buried in sand bottoms and in seagrass beds
Depth range: 1-79 m.
