Simple sand-stargazer

Body compressed, tapering to tail; head large, deep, bluntly rounded at front; eyes on top of head, not stalked, without spots or flaps; tubular nostrils; mouth upturned, with a protruding lower jaw, lower jaw rounded when viewed from above; both lips with skin flaps; upper part of operculum with a frill of skin flaps; dorsal and anal fins with long bases; dorsal fin continuous, origin about over anal origin, soft rays 28-30; anal fin segmented rays 33-35; pelvic fins inserted under throat, each with I, 3, rays thickened and free at the tips; lateral line continuous, bends down under 6th-8th dorsal spine, 15-17 scales on arched front part, 32-34 on rear straight part; 1 row of scales above front of lateral line, 2 rows above end of arched part; scales large, smooth, 2-3 rows between apex of lateral line arch and dorsal fin; head and belly scaleless.

Light tan, upper body irregularly spotted and mottled with brown.

Reaches 7.2 cm.

Lives in shallow shoreline waters.

Depth range: 0-5 m.

Costa Rica and Panama.
