Randall’s blenny

Body elongate and compressed; head short and blunt, without spines; snout a little pointed, not depressed, upper profile straight, rear part of nasal bones with a crest; nape profile slightly convex; nasal cirrus a short flap, no cirrus over eye; mouth oblique, ends under rear edge of eye; jaws with an outer row of small pointed teeth, a band of tiny sharp teeth at the front of both jaws behind the outer row; 1 row of 5-6 large canine teeth on each side of roof of mouth; front of roof of mouth with 10-12 small teeth; dorsal fin origin nearer eye than edge of operculum, XXI, 12-13, front of fin not greatly elevated, spines increasing in size from front to back; anal fin II, 20-22; last ray of dorsal and anal fins joined to tail base by a membrane; pectoral fin 14; pelvics I (internal), 3, inserted before pectoral base, much shorter than pectorals; tail fin rounded; all fin rays unbranched; no lateral line; no scales.

Female: transparent yellowish, finely speckled with black; a series of small black spots (sometimes ringed with pink or orange) along base of dorsal fin; eye pale, with an oblique dark cross bar: an obvious black blotch rings the anus and may extend forwards along the belly; front of dorsal fin tricolored, lower half black, a white stripe above that, outer part orange-red, rest of fin transparent or pinkish; front of anal fin with a wide black stripe along its outer part; tail and pectoral fins transparent. Male: like female, but with head and front of body dark grey-brown, general body color darker than in females, brighter tricolors at front of dorsal fin; rest of spiny dorsal fin and anal fin dark grey-brown.

Reaches 3.4 cm.

Lives on rocky and coral reefs.

Depth range: 5-15 m.
