Body elongate and compressed; head short and blunt, without spines, snout a little pointed, not depressed, upper profile straight, rear part of nasal bones with a crest; nape profile slightly convex; nasal cirrus long and slender; a deeply forked cirrus over eye; mouth oblique, ends under rear edge of eye; jaws with an outer row of larger teeth, those at front straight and with blunt tips, sides of jaws with back-pointed canines, a band of tiny sharp teeth at the front of both jaws behind the outer row; 1 row of 5-6 short, strong teeth on each side of roof of mouth; front of roof of mouth with small teeth; dorsal fin XX-XXI, 11-12, front 3-5 spines elevated and more separated from following spines than those spines are from each other, in male the front portion is greatly elevated with a convex outer edge; anal fin II, 22-23; last ray of dorsal and anal fins joined to tail base by a membrane; pectoral fin 13; pelvics I (internal), 3, inserted before pectoral base, much shorter than pectorals; tail fin rounded; all fin rays unbranched; no lateral line; no scales.

Male: Body yellowish brown to  pale orange-brown; head dark brown to clear greenish, with either dark brown bars across most of head or with orange bars across operculum; male head and front body black, anterior dorsal fin black, outer part of front 1/4 broadly red, bordered outside by a thin white line and inside by broad white stripe that continues as a white outer border along rest of fin, which is greenish; anal fin variable, whitish to blackish, with white tips to rays; bases of dorsal and anal rays pinkish to orange; pectoral base clear green, tips of rays whitish; base of tail fin yellow to orange. Female: body translucent; lower head with brown bars, from chin to edge of operculum; upper and lower body profiles with a series of small dark blotches, the upper series extending onto the dorsal fin base; front few spines of dorsal fin mostly dark brown.

Reaches 3.6 cm.

Lives on reefs.

Depth range: 5-15 m.
