Body elongate; head small and shallow (depth 20-22% of SL), without spines; snout short and blunt, without a pair of bony ridges; no cirrus over eye; 1 row of teeth on each side of roof of mouth; dorsal fin XX-XXI, 12-14, front spines not elongated, shorter than central spines in both sexes, a slight notch between spiny and soft parts, soft part higher than spiny part, membranes between spines and rays deeply indented; anal fin II, 21-23; pectoral rays 14; pelvics I (internal), 3, inserted before pectoral base, much shorter than pectorals; all fin rays unbranched; no lateral line; no scales.

Dark male (found in holes): head black, sometimes white spots on operculum; upper body black to level of 6th dorsal spine, grey behind that level, lower body translucent yellowish cream; pectorals black; pelvics black basally, white outer part; dorsal fin black from spines I-VIII, grading to pale grey behind; anal fin spines black, membranes grey, soft rays with brownish bands; tail fin clear. Female: top of head with oval pink spot in center pink Y, dorsal fin uncolored.

Reaches 3.2 cm.

Lives in holes in and on live corals and on seafans, on lagoonal and outer reefs.

Depth range: < 1-30 m.
