Seafan blenny
Body elongate; head small and shallow (depth 20-22% of SL), without spines; snout short and blunt, without a pair of bony ridges; no cirrus over eye; 1 row of teeth on each side of roof of mouth; dorsal fin XX-XXI, 12-14, front spines not elongated, shorter than central spines in both sexes, a slight notch between spiny and soft parts, soft part higher than spiny part, membranes between spines and rays deeply indented; anal fin II, 22-23; pectoral rays 14; pelvics I (internal), 3, inserted before pectoral base, much shorter than pectorals; all fin rays unbranched; no lateral line; no scales.
Dark male (found in holes): head black; upper body black to level of 6th dorsal spine, grey behind that level, lower body translucent yellowish cream; pectorals black; pelvics black basally, white outer part; dorsal fin black from spines I-VIII, grading to pale grey behind; anal fin spines black, membranes grey, soft rays with brownish bands; tail fin clear. Pale male: Translucent; a red-brown triangular bar down and back from eye, another straight down from eye across lips; side of head with small bluish white spots; behind eye with small black spots – one larger one surrounded by a ring of smaller ones, others scattered on nape, preopercle and opercle; dorsal and anal fins with 3-4 reddish brown bands; pectoral, pelvics and tail fins clear. Female: probably like pale-phase male.
Reaches 3.2 cm.
Lives in holes in and on live corals and on seafans, on lagoonal and outer reefs.
Depth range: < 1-30 m.
