Bottome’s blenny

Body elongate; head blunt rounded, without spines, snout not depressed, without a pair of smooth bony ridges; head behind eye expanded, triangular in shape, rough; no cirrus over eye; 1 row of teeth on each side of roof of mouth; dorsal fin XXI, 12,  spines I-III closer together than remaining spines, front spines not elongate, spines increasing in length to XIV then decreasing to end, spiny part of fin lower than soft part, without a notch between the two parts, soft fin increasing in height to rear; anal fin II, 21; pectoral rays 13; pelvics I (internal), 3, inserted before pectoral base, much shorter than pectorals; all fin rays unbranched; no lateral line; no scales.

Male: head black, body dark brown; front of dorsal fin black, rest of spiny dorsal dark brown, fading to tan at the last few spine; soft dorsal, tail and pelvic fins pale brown; pectoral blackish, tips of lowest 5 rays unpigmented; anal fin black on spines, translucent brown behind. Female translucent, with black spots on cheeks, black bars along lower jaw, black spots on base of pectoral.

Reaches 3 cm.

Lives on reefs.

Depth range: 5-18 m.
