Twospot Sailfin Blenny

Body elongate; head short and blunt, not swollen behind eyes, without spines; 2 smooth longitudinal ridges on snout, no bony ridges between eyes; 1 unbranched cirrus (its length about 2X eye size in male, 1/2 eye size in female) over eye, nasal cirrus simple or with two points; 1 row of 14-16 teeth on each front-side of roof of mouth; dorsal fin XXII, 14-15, fin greatly elevated and sail-like at front in male, 1st spine relatively short, spine V longest, no flap-like flag on base of 1st spine; anal fin II, 22; pectoral 13; pelvics I (internal), inserted before pectoral base, longer than pectoral, with 3 obvious rays (3rd ray >1/4 length of longest ray); all fin rays unbranched; no lateral line; no scales.

Preserved fish: Male- dark brown; upper body with 9 dark blotches, another row of 8 along midline, first 2 in latter series reaching almost to lower body profile; eye cirrus not barred; spiny dorsal black, soft part pale; an oblique bar back and down to throat from eye. Female- paler brown than male; upper body with 9 dark blotches, another row of 8 along midline, each of the latter with 3 ring-like marks above it; head with round dark spots, best developed between rear of mouth and front of dorsal fin; dorsal fin with oblique dark bars at front and 2 dark ocelli between spines IV-VI, tail fin with 5 bars; anal fin with 1 stripe along mid fin, stripe broader at front.

Reaches 4.8 cm.

Lives in sponges in areas rich in sponges.

Depth range: 60-70 m.
