Labrisomus nuchipinnis (Quoy & Gaimard, 1824)

Hairy blenny

Body robust; head broad, snout blunt; eye large; a branched cirrus over each eye, length of that cirrus < eye diameter; 2 or more heavily branched cirri on each side of nape; mouth large, slightly oblique, rear of top jawbone exposed, not in a sheath; patches of small teeth behind outer row of large teeth on upper jaw; teeth present on sides of roof of mouth, those are smaller or equal to teeth at front of roof of mouth; 11-12 (10-13) gill rakers; large fish with more than 2 pores at tip of chin; notch between spines and rays of dorsal fin, XVII-XX, 1st 2 spines shorter than 3rd spine, 10-13; anal fin II, usually 18; pelvic fins with 1 internal spine, 3 soft rays, 3rd ray >1/2 length of 1st ray, inserted before pectoral base; all fin rays unbranched; 64-69 lateral line scales; lateral line tubes or canals at least on front of body; smooth scales on rear of body.

Color highly variable, from pale with light brown bars, those bars extend onto dorsal fin but do not reach outer edge of fin; males vary from yellowish to greenish to almost black with red head, fins, chin and belly; head with small pale spots in a mesh of dark lines; a well developed black, white ringed ocellus on operculum; a dark blotch at front of dorsal fin (except in small juveniles).

Reaches 22 cm.

Patch reefs, coral formations, coral rubble.

Depth range: 0-21 m; typically < 3 m.

The E and W Atlantic; Bermuda to Brasil.
