Head moderate, snout short; body robust; front of eye and around nostrils spiny; cirrus over eye wider than long, blunt; no cirri on nape; no teeth on sides of roof of mouth; three dorsal fins: III + XII (XI-XIII) + 7, 1st fin much shorter than second, normally some soft rays branched; anal soft rays 15 (15-16); pectoral 15 (14-16); pelvics I (imbedded), 2; lateral line in 2 straight, slightly overlapping sections, scales on front part pored 13 (12-13), those on rear part notched (17-20); cheek behind eye with 2-3 rough scales; pectoral base and belly scaled; body scales rough; 2 rows scales (top row smaller) above rear part of lateral line.
Head & body tan; rear body often orange or red; a prominent dark bar under eye; body with several dark spots along front part of lateral line, 5 dark bars, last bar darkest, narrowly rectangular, corners square to rounded; a narrow red bar behind last dark bar; 1st dorsal with 2 dark bands; anal fin uniform or with slanted bars; tail fin with a strong narrow dark bar at front, a broad, indistinct bar behind.
Reaches 4 cm.
Shallow sheltered reef formations, often on the underside of ledges.
Depth range: 0-11 m, usually < 6 m.
Florida, the Bahamas, through the Caribbean.
Note: E. pectoralis is a synonym.
