Mimic triplefin

Head moderate, body robust; front of eye and around nostrils spiny; cirrus over eye longer than wide, pointed, no cirri on nape; no teeth on sides of roof of mouth; three dorsal fins: III + X-XIII + 10-13, 1st dorsal shorter than second; normally some soft rays branched; anal soft rays usually 15; pectoral 15 (14-16); pelvics I (imbedded), 2; lateral line in 2 straight, slightly overlapping sections, scales on front part pored 13 (12-14), those on rear part notched; cheek behind eye with 0 (rarely 1-2 small smooth) scales; pectoral base and belly scaled; scales above lateral line and behind pectoral base enlarged; body scales rough; 2 scales between front of lateral line and base of dorsal fin.

Body translucent, rear not orange to red; body with 5 vertical brown bars, last one darkest, a wide rectangle with squared corners; no dark bar under eye; 1st dorsal with 2 dark bands; anal fin with less than 6 dark bars; no dark spots on front part of lateral line.

Reaches 4 cm.

Lives in rock ledges and complex coral formations, in sheltered areas.

Depth range: 0-11 m.

An uncommon species from the Bahamas, Puerto Rico, west Caribbean atolls, Belize and Honduras.
