Head moderate, body robust; snout blunt, short, usually much less than eye; front of eye and around nostrils spiny; a short, broad cirrus over eye, no cirri on nape; no teeth on sides of roof of mouth; 3 dorsal fins: III + XII (XI-XIII) + 8 (7-9), first fin usually short, not reaching base of 2nd spine of 2nd dorsal fin, except large males, normally some soft rays branched; anal soft rays 16 (15-16); pectoral 15 (15-16) ; pelvics I (imbedded), 2; lateral line in 2 straight, slightly overlapping sections, scales on front part pored 15 (14-16), those on rear part notched, 19-22; pectoral base and belly unscaled; body scales rough; 3 rows of scales (top row small) above rear part of lateral line.
Body translucent, head reddish, iris red; eye to top jaw with 2 thin dark bars; 5 brown bars on body, 1st four usually indistinct, 5th much darker, usually wider than preceding pale interspace, interspace before that bar whitish, without secondary bar or dark blotch, no red bar behind last dark bar; second dorsal fin with 3 round dark spots on base; anal fin with 4-5 dark blotches; tail fin with 2 wide, dark, often reddish bars.
Reaches 4 cm.
Lives in rock ledges and complex coral formations, patch reefs and rocky shorelines.
Depth range: 0-25 m.
Florida, south through the northern and southwest Caribbean.
