Chromis multilineata (Guichenot, 1853)

Brown chromis

Body compressed, an elongate oval; 1 pair of nostrils; edge of bone under eye smooth, no notch, hidden by scales; preopercle smooth or with occasional fine serrations; mouth small, protrusible, opens at front; teeth in 2 rows, outer conical, larger; a single continuous dorsal fin XIII, 12-13; anal fin II, 11-13; pectoral 18-20; 2-3 short projecting spines at upper and lower base of tail fin; caudal fin deeply forked, with sharp tips; scales large and rough; body scaled, most of head scaled, basal parts of the median fins scaled; lateral line incomplete, ends under end of dorsal fin base; lateral line scales 19-20.

Grey-green; edges of dorsal and anal fin, and tips of tail yellow; a white spot just below base of soft dorsal fin; a large black spot on inside of pectoral base; tail fin with black upper and lower margins.

Size: attains 20 cm.

A common species that forms large aggregations around reef tops.

Depth: 1-91 m.

Bermuda to Brazil, the mid-Atlantic islands and the eastern Atlantic.
