Brazilian chromis

Body compressed, a deep oval; 1 pair of nostrils; edge of bone under eye smooth, no notch, covered with scales; preopercle smooth or with occasional fine serrations; mouth small, protrusible, opens at front; teeth in 2 rows, outer conical, larger; a single continuous dorsal fin XIII, 11-12; anal fin II, 9-11; pectoral 18; upper and lower base of with 2-3 exposed short fin rays; tail fin forked, with rounded tips; body scaled, most of head scaled, basal parts of the median fins scaled; scales large and rough; lateral line incomplete, ends under end of dorsal fin base; lateral line scales 15-17.

Adult: Blackish brown, paler ventrally; tail base and fin and upper 3/4 of soft dorsal fin bright yellow; black anal and pelvic fins; tips of dorsal and anal spines blue; transparent or yellowish pectoral fin, with a dark spot at axil. Juvenile: upper head, body, and all of dorsal fin, tail base and tail fin yellow; purplish brown to dark blue below that.

Reaches 9.6 cm.

Rocky reefs.

Depth range: 1-71 m.

Brazil; the SE Caribbean.
