Top of head flat; fatty (adipose) tissue covering most of eye; mouth small, opens at front; lips thin, lower lip with a prominent central knob; teeth very small, not or just visible as a fine fringe; upper jaw with outer row of recurved, spaced apart, single-pointed teeth, inner row of small teeth may be just behind outer row; lower jaw with single row of smaller, fine teeth; two short, widely spaced dorsal fins, IV (origin nearer to snout tip than to tail fin base)+ l, 8, origin of first dorsal slightly nearer snout than tail fin base; anal fin III, 9, (II, i9 in small juveniles); pectorals high on body, 1st ray hard, i, 15-16, usually not quite reaching level of origin of first dorsal fin; scales relatively small, lateral series from top of pectoral base to caudal fin base 45 (42-47), 13-15 in transverse series, 20-23 around base of tail; second dorsal and anal well scaled over entire fin; no lateral line.
Bluish grey to olivaceous above; flanks silvery; dorsal and tail fins dusky, outer part of dorsal darker; pelvic and anal pale; pectoral with dark spot at origin.
Size: grows to 40 cm.
Habitat: inshore marine waters, estuaries, enter freshwater.
Depth: 0-25 m.
