Body oval, deep, compressed; snout short, blunt; mouth small, with brush-like teeth; a long, strong spine at the corner of the preopercle with vertical margin serrated; rear of bone under eye with 2 large, rear-pointing spines; smaller spines on the preopercle, and opercle; dorsal fin un-notched, XIV-XV, 15-16; anal rays III,17; dorsal and anal fins with bluntly angular rear tips; scales squarish, moderate sized 32-34 in lateral series, regularly arranged, very rough and with distinct ridges on the exposed part; scales extend out onto the median fins; without "axillary process" (an enlarged scale) at the base of the pelvic fins; lateral line ends under soft dorsal fin.

Deep blue body, with yellow to orange chest and lower head; a blue ring around eye.

Maximum size about 5 cm.

Habitat: coral and rubble bottoms.

Depth: 5-170 m, usually below 30 m.

N Carolina to the S Caribbean.
