Striped Croaker, Striped Drum

Body oblong, moderately elongate, upper profile arched, lower profile nearly straight; head low, broad, conical; mouth small, slightly under pointed snout; chin with 1 short, rigid barbel (with a pore at its tip), 2 pairs of pores beside it; snout with 5-7 front pores, 5 on side; teeth in bands on each jaw; preopercle finely serrated; 13-15 short, stout gill rakers; top corner of gill opening notched; dorsal fin XI, 23-26 rays; anal II, 6 rays, 2nd spine strong, 3/4 length of 1st ray; tail straight to slightly concave; scales rough, 5-6 between dorsal fin origin and lateral line; scale rows under spiny dorsal parallel to lateral line; bases of soft dorsal and anal fins with 1 row of scales along base, small scales on membranes of inner half of soft dorsal; the lateral line extends to the center of the end of the tail fin.

Silvery, back darker; body with 8-9 indistinct vertical bars; and longitudinal lines formed by rows of dots on scales, lines under dorsal fin are parallel to lateral line; belly, lower jaw, pelvics, anal and lower part of tail fin yellowish.

Size: 25 cm.

Habitat: sandy bottoms along beaches and around coral reefs.

Depth: 1-35 m?

Hispaniola to the S Caribbean.
