Body elongate, moderately compressed; head conical, deep, top of skull slightly convex cavernous, not spongy to touch; mouth a little oblique, opens under slightly projecting snout; teeth on lower jaw with central row slightly enlarged; chin with 6 pores, no barbels; snout with 8 pores; preopercle with 6-7 short lower spines; gill rakers short, 28-32; top corner of gill opening notched; deep notch between spiny and soft parts of dorsal fin, XI + I-II, 22-24; anal fin with short base II, 8-9, 2nd spine long; tail fin long and pointed; pored lateral line scales 45-49; rough on body, smooth on head, except 1-3 rough rows along midline of nape; the lateral line extends to the center of the end of the tail fin.
Uniform silvery to pale with a pinkish tint; fins pale; roof of mouth pale.
Reaches 20 cm.
On sandy mud bottoms.
Depth range: 2-25 m.
Santo Domingo to the S Caribbean.
