Stellifer naso (Jordan, 1889)

Naso Stardrum

Body elongate, moderately compressed; head large, low and broad, skull cavernous, translucent, spongy to touch; eye large (24-29% of head); mouth moderately large, ~horizontal, opens under snout; teeth on lower jaw equal in size, no enlarged central row; chin with 4 pores, no barbels; snout with 8 pores; preopercle with 7-10 short spines at angle; gill rakers short, 22-26; top corner of gill opening notched; deep notch between spiny and soft parts of dorsal fin, X + I-II, 21-23; anal fin with short base II, 8-9 , 2nd spine 3/4 1st ray; pelvics short, not reaching tip of pectorals; tail fin pointed; pored lateral line scales 50-52; scales rough on body and head, rough on top of head to between eyes; the lateral line extends to the center of the end of the tail fin.

Silvery grey above, yellowish below; pectoral yellow, with dark speckling; pelvics yellow with black edges; anal yellow with black speckling; dorsal and tail fins dark grey.

Reaches 15 cm.

On sand and mud bottoms, and estuaries

Depth range: 1-30 m.

Colombia to NE Brazil.
