Grey Stardrum

Body oblong, robust, more or less compressed; head large, low and broad, skull cavernous, translucent, spongy to touch, wide between eyes; mouth large, (reaches under rear edge of eye), oblique, opens a little under snout; chin with 6 pores, no barbells; snout with 8 pores; preopercle with 2 strong bony spines at angle; gill rakers long and slender, 51-59, densely packed; top corner of gill opening notched; deep notch between spiny and soft parts of dorsal fin, X-XI + I-II, 21-23; anal fin with short base II, 8-9, 2nd spine ¾ of 1st ray; pectorals long, reaching anal fin origin; tail fin with a blunt point; pored lateral line scales 53-56; scales rough on body, mostly smooth on chest and head, center of nape with 0 to a few rough scales but not in rows; soft dorsal with 2-3 rows of small scales along its base; the lateral line extends to the center of the end of the tail fin.

Silvery grey, pale below; anal and pelvic fins yellowish, others dusky, with dark edges; inside gill chamber dusky, not black.

Reaches 20 cm.

Shallow coastal sand and mud bottoms, including estuaries

Depth range: 3-50 m.

Honduras to Guyana.
