Protosciaena bathytatos (Chao & Miller, 1975)

Deepwater Drum

Body oblong, compressed; very large eye; mouth large, slightly overhung by snout, slightly oblique; teeth simple, in bands, outer row on top jaw sharp and widely spaced; chin without barbels, with 5 pores; preopercle strongly serrated; top corner of gill opening notched; dorsal fin with deep notch between spiny and soft parts, XI spines, 21-23 soft rays; anal fin with short base, II, 7 rays, 2nd spine long and stout; tail fin with angular, sharp point; scales rough except smooth on snout and cheeks; soft dorsal with 2-3 rows of small scales along its base; lateral line extends to the center of the end of the tail fin.

Silvery grey to brownish; base of pectoral with a dark spot; inside gill cover and roof of mouth jet black.

Reaches at least 31 cm.

Found over mud bottoms.

Depth range: 70-600 m.

Panama to eastern Venezuela.
