Body elongate, compressed; very large eye; mouth large, slightly overhung by snout, ~horizontal; teeth simple, in bands, outer row on top jaw sharp and widely spaced; chin without barbels, with 5 pores; preopercle smooth to weakly serrated; top corner of gill opening notched; dorsal fin with deep notch between spiny and soft parts, XI spines, 24-26 soft rays; anal fin with short base, II, 7 rays, 2nd spine long and stout; pectoral fins long, reach above vent; tail with angular, sharp point; scales rough except smooth on snout and cheeks; soft dorsal with 2-3 rows of small scales along its base; the lateral line extends to the center of the end of the tail fin.
Silvery grey; back often with oblique stripes along scale rows; base of pectoral with a diffuse dark area; inside gill cover and roof of mouth jet black.
Reaches at least 21 cm.
Found over mud bottoms.
Depth range: 70-220 m.
Honduras to Venezuela.
