Shorthead drum

Body short, oblong, compressed; back humped; head short, compressed; snout very short; eye large; mouth large, very oblique to vertical; lower jaw projecting; teeth very small and sharp, in 1-2 rows along edges of jaws; chin with 4 minute pores, no barbels; snout with 5 pores along its edge; preopercular margin slightly serrate, without large spines; gill rakers 28-33, long and slender, longest > eye; top corner of gill opening notched; dorsal fin deeply notched, IX-X + I, 26-29; anal rays II, 6-7, second spine long and stout, ¾ length of 1st ray; tail with moderate angular point; scales rough on body and top of head; smooth on cheeks and operculum; lateral line extends to the center of the end of the tail fin.

Color uniform silver grey, darker on back; a dark spot at base of pectoral fin; pelvic and anal fins yellowish.

Size: attains 31 cm.

Inhabits sand and mud bottoms of coastal waters; juveniles enter estuaries.

Depth: 1-60 m.

Cuba to SE Brazil.
