Silver weakfish, Silver seatrout

Elongate and moderately compressed; mouth large, oblique, lower jaw slightly projecting; teeth in multiple rows with 2 large canines at tip of upper jaw, inner row of teeth on lower jaw widely spaced, enlarged, increasing in size to rear; gill rakers short, 11-15; no pores or barbels on chin; 2 pores on side of snout; preoperculum smooth; top corner of gill opening notched; dorsal rays X + I, 26-31; anal rays II (weak), 8-11; pectoral fins ½ head length, shorter than pelvic fins; rear margin of tail straight to with a blunt angular point below the midline; scales on body large and rough, equal to or larger than lateral line scales; soft dorsal with basal half scaled; lateral line arched anteriorly and straight well before level of anus, extends to the center of the end of the tail fin.

Body silvery grey; back sometimes with faint oblique irregular rows of spots along scale rows; dorsal dusky, other fins yellowish.

Size: reaches 40 cm.

Inhabits sand bottoms of estuaries and coastal areas.

Depth: 1-110 m.

Chesapeake Bay to the Gulf of Mexico.
