Jamaica weakfish

Elongate, fusiform, compressed, oval cross-section; head low, not spongy on top; eye moderate; mouth large, oblique, lower jaw slightly projecting; teeth in multiple rows with 1-2 large canines at tip of upper jaw, lower jaw with widely spaced teeth, larger at rear of jaw; gill rakers long and slender, 9-13; no pores or barbels on chin; 2 pores on side of snout; margin of preopercle smooth; top corner of gill opening notched; dorsal rays X + I, 23-27; anal rays II, small (< ½ length of 1st ray) weak spines, 8-10; pectoral fins > pelvic fins; rear margin of tail doubly concave to straight in adult; scales rough on body, smooth on head; body scales equal to or larger than lateral line scales; lower 1/2 of soft dorsal covered with small scales; lateral line arched anteriorly and straight well before level of anus, extends to the center of the end of the tail fin.

Body silver; faint dark streaks along scale rows above lateral line; pectoral base and upper rays dark; lower parts of pectoral, pelvic and anal fins yellowish; inside opercle dark, visible externally.

Size: reaches 50 cm.

Inhabits sand and mud bottoms of coastal waters, juveniles in estuaries.

Depth: 1-120 m.

Hispaniola to Suriname.
