Striped Croaker

Body short, oblong, compressed; head short, cavernous but not spongy on top; eye moderate size (¼ of head length); mouth moderate in size, slightly oblique, opens at front; jaw teeth small, conical, in bands; chin without barbels, with 5 pores; gill rakers 23-25, long and slender; margin of peropercle thin, nearly smooth; top corner of gill opening notched; dorsal rays X-XI+I, 21-24; anal rays II, 9, second spine moderately strong, 28-31% head length, a bit less than 2/3 length of first soft ray; tail with round to straight edge; scales smooth on head, rough on body; basal 1/2 of dorsal and anal scaled; the lateral line extends to the center of the end of the tail fin.

Grey to blue-grey on back, silvery below; sides with faint stripes, oblique above lateral line and longitudinal below; fins pale, yellowish, a faint dark spot at pectoral origin.

Maximum size 26 cm.

Inhabits muddy and sandy bottoms inshore; juveniles also in rocky areas.

Depth: 1-35 m.

Florida to Guyana, also in Brazil.
