Corvula batabana (Poey, 1860)

Blue croaker

Body short, oblong, compressed; head short, cavernous but not spongy on top; eye moderate size (¼ of head length); mouth slightly overhung by snout, slightly oblique; jaw teeth small, conical, in bands; chin with 5 pores, no barbel; margin of peropercle finely serrated; gill rakers 18-22; top corner of gill opening notched; dorsal rays X-XI+I, 25-29; anal rays II, 7-8, second anal spine moderately strong, 33-40% head length, but <2/3 length of first soft ray; tail fin rounded; scales smooth on head, rough on body, basal 1/2 of soft dorsal and anal scaled; lateral line scales 50; lateral line extends to center of the end of the tail fin.

A distinctive dark blue-grey; scattered dark spots on upper back; thin dark stripes, oblique above lateral line, horizontal below.

Maximum size, to about 25 cm.

Inhabits clear water, vegetated mud flats and coral reef areas.

Depth: 3-30 m.

The Gulf of Mexico to the S Caribbean.
