Haemulopsis corvinaeformis (Steindachner, 1868)

Roughneck grunt

Body elongate, robust, (depth 25-30% of SL), strongly compressed; rear margin of bone under eye concealed by scales; mouth small to moderate size, inside not red, lips thin; chin with 2 pores at front and 2 inside hole behind, plus a longitudinal groove; preopercle finely serrated, ventral serrations not forward pointing; 10-12 short lower gill rakers; dorsal fin XII, 13-15; anal rays III, 6-7, spines all short and weak; scales over entire body and head except front of snout, lips and chin; scales in longitudinal series just above lateral-line 49-52; 5-6 scale rows above and 10 rows below lateral line; soft dorsal fin with a low sheath of scales on its base and 1 row of scales on membranes between rays.

Dark olive above, silvery below; a diffuse dark blotch on shoulder; lips with dark edges; a dark line along each row of scales below the lateral line; scales above lateral line with dark centers that do not form lines; dorsal, tail, anal and pelvic fins with dark edges.

Size: grows to at least 25 cm.

Inhabits on mud and sand bottoms or low relief rubble and hard bottoms.

Depth: 0-50 m.

Cuba to Brazil.
