Conodon nobilis (Linnaeus, 1758)

Barred grunt

Elongate, moderately robust, compressed; eye large; rear margin of bone under eye concealed by scales; chin with a central groove, two pores at front, 2 more in hole behind them; preopercle border concave, strongly serrated, 2 large spines at angle; outer row of teeth on both jaws enlarged; dorsal fin XII, 12-13; anal III, 7-8, second spine much large than third; scales over entire body and head except front of snout, lips and chin; lateral-line scales 50-53, 5 scales above and 11 below lateral line.

Brownish on back, white below, sides with yellow lines; 8 wide blackish bars on upper side usually evident; soft dorsal, anal, and pelvic fins yellow.

Size: grows to about 30 cm.

On soft bottoms, typically in turbid waters.

Depth: 1-100 m, but typically in shallow waters; occasionally in freshwater.

Florida to Brazil.
