Palometa pompano

Body short, deep, triangular, compressed; upper and lower profiles similar; snout blunt; mouth reaches under eye; top jaw extendible; jaw teeth small, conical, curved, absent in fish > 20 cm FL; gill rakers 5-7 + 8-14; dorsal fin with VI short, stout spines, 1st resorbed in adults, 19-20 rays; anal fin II + I, 16-18 rays; dorsal & anal fin lobes very elongated; base of anal about same length as that of soft dorsal; no finlets after 2nd dorsal and anal fins; pectoral fin < head length; tail base slender, without notches above & below; tail strongly forked; no scutes (hard, spiny scales) on lateral line; body scales oval.

Silvery; 2-5 prominent narrow dark bars on upper mid side followed by 2-3 dark spots; dorsal fin lobe blackish, that of anal with blackish yellow.

Reaches 50.6 cm; 3.6 kg.

Pelagic, schooling in surf zone of beaches, vegetated bottoms, and around reefs; usually marine.

Depth range: 0-40 m.

Massachusetts to Argentina.
