Body an elongate oval, moderately compressed in adults; upper and lower profiles similar; eye small; both jaws with a single row of blunt conical teeth, top jaw sometimes with an inner row of conical teeth at front; lips notably fleshy and covered with papillae, top lip projects beyond lower lip; top jaw not reaching under eye; 34-42 gill rakers; dorsal fin VIII + I, 25-27, spines of 1st dorsal long, longer than rays of 2nd dorsal; anal fin II + I, 21-26; last dorsal and anal rays longer than preceding rays and more widely separated; dorsal and anal fins not followed by finlets; pectoral fin longer than head; tail base slender; tail strongly forked; rear part (but not curved front part) of lateral line with 2-27 front scales + 16-31 rear scutes (large, hard spiny scales).
Pale blue-green above, silvery below; a yellow stripe along rear side (better developed in young), widening at rear; a yellow stripe along bases of soft dorsal and anal fins; tail dusky yellow; a prominent small black spot at upper rear edge of operculum.
Reaches 122 cm; 18.1 kg.
Bentho-pelagic, nearshore.
Depth range: 0-238 m.
Indo-central Pacific and both sides of the Atlantic; antitropical; Georgia to Brazil.
