Chloroscombrus chrysurus (Linnaeus, 1766)

Atlantic Bumper

Body ovate, highly compressed, ventral profile more convex than the dorsal profile; mouth small and oblique; dorsal rays VIII+I, 25-28; anal rays II+I, 25-28; no finlets after 2nd dorsal and anal fins; pectoral longer than head, curved; tail base slender; tail strongly forked; lateral line with a pronounced, short anterior arch; 5-15 very weak scutes, (hard spiny scales) on tail base; body obviously scaly.

Body and head dark metallic blue above, silver on sides; a black spot in the upper border of the operculum; a black saddle on the upper part of the tail base; tail yellow.

Size: reaches 33.5 cm.

Habitat: pelagic, forms schools in shallow coastal seas; juveniles in estuaries and mangrove lagoons.

Depth: 0-110 m.

On both sides of the Atlantic; Massachusetts to Uruguay.
