Anchor Tilefish, Gulf Bareye Tilefish

Body robust, quadrangular; head relatively deep, rounded in profile; fleshy ridge along midline before dorsal fin; mouth short, reaches under front edge of eye; operculum with a short, blunt spine; vertical edge of preoperculum serrated; no barbel on rear edge of top lip; 18-22 gill rakers; dorsal fin VII, 24-25 rays; anal I-II, 22-23; pectoral fin 16-17; tail fin W shaped, center convex; scales rough on body, smooth on head; pored lateral line scales 73-81; no scales on bone between preoperculum and operculum.

Back and upper sides light violet brown; ridge along nape dark, with a dark semicircle at front; an oblique dark bar from eye forward to mouth; snout tip dark; a small dark spot above pectoral base; dorsal fin with dark base, opal center and broad outer dusky stripe; anal fin opaline.

Reaches 31 cm.

Lives on mud bottoms.

Depth range: 45-290 m, common at 60-110 m.

The Gulf of Mexico, also in Brazil.
