Striped cardinalfish

Body oblong, compressed; head large, snout short; eye large; narrow between eyes (width 7.2-8.1% of SL); moderately large oblique mouth that opens at the front; top jaw wide, partly concealed when mouth is closed, scaleless; jaws with bands of small teeth, no canines; front and sides of roof of mouth with a band of small teeth; preopercle serrated, lower membranous flap not extending beyond edge of preoperculum; 12-16 lower gill rakers; dorsal fin VI + I, 8; anal fin II, 8-9; inner pelvic ray mostly not attached to body; pectoral 12; tail fin slightly concave; body scales rough, similar size to lateral line scales; 3-8 scales on center of nape before dorsal fin; lateral line complete, extends onto base of tail fin.

Head and body translucent red to reddish bronze; body  with ~10 thin dark stripes; a diffuse round dark spot at end of tail base that does not extend to the top and bottom of the tail base;  fins yellowish.

Reaches 4.8 cm.

Lives with sponges and sea anemones in seagrass beds, and on rocky and rubble bottoms.

Depth: 1-74 m.

SE Florida, the central Caribbean; Brazil.
