Banded basslet
Elongate, compressed body; eye large; snout short; mouth opens at front; teeth on jaws, and front and sides of roof of mouth; preopercle edge smooth; opercle with a flat projection; gill rakers long, 20 (19-22); dorsal fin XI, 9; anal fin III, 8; pectorals rounded, 16 (15-17); pelvics I, 5, with 1st ray elongated, reaching past anal fin base; tail fin slightly forked, with rounded tips; short rays on upper and lower base of tail fin thick and spiny, 4-5 on top of tail; no lateral line.
Head and body white; 3 narrow black bars - 1st bar from nape through eye to lower body profile, 2nd bar from dorsal origin to belly, behind the pectoral fin base, the 3rd under the rear end of the dorsal fin, this bar usually fainter than 2nd bar; dorsal fin with a low black blotch (bordered above by a yellow line) on the base of the fin above the 2nd bar and a well defined, round, black, white-ringed ocellus at the lower rear corner of the fin, fin with rows of yellow spots, margin yellow; tail fin with rows of yellow spots along fin rays; anal fin whitish, with yellow outer margin & yellow spots along base; pelvic fins white; pectorals clear.
Reaches 6 cm.
Lives on deep reefs.
Depth range: 137-323 m.
Caribbean Mexico to the southern Caribbean.
