Orangeback bass
Body elongate, moderately compressed; snout shorter than eye; rear of top jaw exposed when mouth closed, without accessory bone above it; 3 opercular spines well developed, middle spine straight; preopercle regularly serrated, no spur with enlarged spines; gill rakers 15-18; dorsal fin X,10; anal fin III, 6-7; pelvics inserted before pectoral base; pectoral fin 13-17; tail with slightly concave edge, 13-15 branched rays; scales very rough, relatively large, 10-12 rows of scales on cheek; 46-50 pored lateral line scales; top of head without scales.
Upper 1/3 of head and body red-brown, darker on midbody, lower 2/3 white, with 7 short pale orange bars and blotches below; 2 rectangular orange blotches with dark brown borders on upper operculum behind eye.
Reaches 9 cm.
Reef associated - on sand bottoms with rock and rubble.
Depth range: 4-115 m.
N Carolina to Brazil.
