Large-spotted Soapfish
Body elongate, very compressed; forehead oblique; 2 pairs of nostrils, anterior tubular; lower jaw projecting; rear of top jaw exposed when mouth closed, without accessory bone above it; no knob at front of chin; simple teeth in bands on jaws; gill opening restricted above, most of upper part of operculum bound to body by skin; preopercle and opercle each with 3 spines; 8-12 gill rakers; dorsal fin II (II-III), 24-27; anal fin 0, 16 (14-17); pectoral rays 13-15 (usually 13); median fins thick, fleshy; rounded tail and pectoral fins; scales imbedded.
Pale tan; with head and front half of body with a few large, rounded dark brown spots, those on upper back typically larger than pupil, those behind eye may fuse to form a stripe; a cream stripe along midline from snout to dorsal fin.
Size: to 7.5 cm.
Inhabits reefs.
Depth: 0-70 m.
The Bahamas to the SW Caribbean.
