Body elongate, robust, compressed, depth at dorsal origin not greater than at anal origin; snout much longer than eye; in adult rear nostril 2-5X larger than front nostril; lower jaw projecting; rear of top jaw exposed when mouth closed, without accessory bone above it; teeth depressible; canines at front of jaws; preopercle serrated at lower corner, without a distinct notch above serrated corner; gill rakers, including rudiments 23-25, 15-17 below; dorsal fin with XI spines, indented between spines, 15-17 rays, rear edge bluntly pointed; anal fin with III spines, 11-12 rays, rear edge bluntly pointed; tail straight in juvenile, slightly concave in adult; dorsal, anal and tail fins with protruding rays in large fish; scales on side of body rough in juvenile, smooth in adult; 82-83 scales on lateral line.
Adult: head and body densely covered with red-brown to dark brown spots; nape and upper body with a series of 9-11 strongly defined narrow whitish to greenish bars, those on body angled obliquely forwards; lower body with a network of pale lines; outer part of pectorals yellowish; inside mouth red-orange to yellow-orange. Juvenile: yellow, a dark stripe from snout, through eye along mid-side and fading out under soft dorsal.
Reaches 101 cm.
Found on reefs.
Depth range: 3-135 m.
