Body elongate, robust, compressed, depth at dorsal origin not greater than at anal origin; snout much longer than eye; in adult rear nostril distinctly larger than front nostril; lower jaw projecting; rear of top jaw exposed when mouth closed, without accessory bone above it; teeth depressible; canines at front of jaws; preopercle serrated, with a distinct lobe bearing larger serrae at corner; gill rakers, including rudiments, 9-13 + 18-23; dorsal fin with XI spines, indented between spines, 15-17 rays, rear edge angular in adult, with rays 9-11 elongated and uneven; anal fin with III spines, 10-12 rays, rays 4-6 elongated, lower rear edge pointed in adult; tail fin slightly concave; 75 scales on lateral line.
Adult: head and body grayish to pale brown, with a greenish tint, both with pale spots and blotches on upper parts; head with several dark stripes running back from eye to across operculum; soft dorsal and soft anal dark, with a thin white edge and a broad dark edge below that; pectoral yellow-grey; tail fin with a thin white rear edge and a dark bar in from that. Juvenile: greenish brown with irregular brown spots.
Reaches 114 cm.
Found on reefs and soft coral fields.
Depth range: 5-160 m, adults usually at > 80 m.
Colombia to Venezuela, rarely Jamaica.
